Hidden Nullarbor Caves: Clues at the Surface

While exploring the Nullarbor, I have had the privilege of working with many scientists, including Dr Matej Lipar from Slovenia. Matej has recently published research in Communications Earth & Environment, part of Nature Portfolio, about deep cave systems that have collapsed, leaving barely perceptible traces on the surface.

These traces can look like shallow valleys. Rather than being carved by rivers, they mark places where cave ceilings have gradually collapsed and the ground above has subsided.

The research has implications beyond Earth. Recognising the surface signs of hidden caves could help scientists interpret similar landscapes on Mars and identify places worth investigating for evidence of past life.

Caves could offer protection from the harsh environment on Mars’ surface, making them places of interest in the search for microscopic life. Whether any Martian cave has supported life remains an open question.

Here on the Nullarbor, we know that hidden cave systems provide sheltered habitats for insects living without light. Our discoveries have shown that species with origins in a wetter time, millions of years ago, have evolved and remain hidden beneath the landscape.

It is a reminder that the Nullarbor’s stories extend far below the surface. Even a shallow valley can offer a clue to an ancient world concealed beneath our feet.
